Since 1983, DES Engineering has built a reputation for delivering exceptional engineering solutions across Alberta. We started in the Edmonton Power franchise area, providing overhead and underground power distribution services, and have since expanded into the Fortis Alberta and ATCO Electric franchise areas, as well as municipal, building, and utility-led services.
Over four decades, we’ve become a trusted partner to land developers, civil engineering firms, utility companies, and municipalities, bringing deep technical expertise and a straightforward, results-driven approach to every project.
We’re active participants in the broader industry, contributing to organizations like BILD Edmonton Metro to help shape the standards and practices that guide our field. In the communities we work in, we believe in showing up beyond the job site through volunteer involvement and a genuine commitment to giving back.
As the founder of DES Engineering and a pioneer of Alberta’s electrical URD industry, Al Thomas shaped the company into what it is today.
His innovative and forward-thinking approach helped define the electrical URD landscape across the province, influencing many of the practices still in use today. Al was deeply committed to delivering the highest level of engineering service to clients throughout Alberta, always mindful of efficiency and value.
Beyond being an accomplished businessman and engineer, Al was extraordinarily generous. He lived that generosity every day within his company and firmly believed in supporting those in need. Through his success, he consistently gave back — sponsoring charitable events and contributing through countless meaningful donations.
Al’s legacy will continue to guide and inspire us. He will forever remain in our hearts and will be deeply missed.

Over our history, DES Engineering has proudly provided servicing designs across more than 50 municipalities throughout Alberta.
We are active members of BILD Edmonton Metro, where our involvement runs deep. Our team holds the Chair of the Shallow Utility Working Group, a seat on the Developer Technical Committee, and the Chair of the YourDI Urban Leaders Committee. We also participate in Municipal Standards Review Committees across numerous jurisdictions, including the City of Edmonton, Strathcona County, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan, Beaumont, Leduc, Lloydminster, and St. Albert.
Our commitment to community extends well beyond engineering. Over the last 12 years, our team has raised over $1.25 million for local charities — and the construction projects we’ve managed collectively exceed $1 billion in value.
