Since 1983, DES Engineering has been a beacon of excellence in the engineering industry
Initially serving the Edmonton Power franchise area with overhead and underground power distribution systems, our growth and expansion into the Fortis Alberta and Atco Electric franchise areas underscore our commitment to broadening our reach and services.
With a rich history of providing comprehensive and cost-effective solutions, we’ve established ourselves as a trusted partner to land developers, civil engineering firms, utility companies, and municipalities. Our extensive knowledge and unwavering dedication have placed us at the forefront of Alberta’s engineering consulting firms.
Our involvement extends beyond providing services. We actively participate in industry committees and organizations like the Urban Development Institute and BILD Alberta, contributing our expertise to shape industry standards and practices. Moreover, we believe in giving back to our community through volunteer work, reinforcing our ethos of service and commitment.
As the founder of DES Engineering and a pioneer of the electrical URD industry within Alberta, Al Thomas molded DES Engineering into what it is today.
His innovative and progressive ideas helped shape the electrical URD industry and many of the practices still undertaken today. Al dedicated his time to providing the highest level of engineering service to clients throughout Alberta with the bottom dollar always in mind.
Not only was he an exceptionally well-versed businessman and engineer, Al had no limit to his generosity. He practiced it daily within his own business and believed strongly in helping those in need. Through his great success, he was constantly helping others by sponsoring charitable events and a multitude of generous donations.
He will forever always be in our hearts and will be missed.

- We are active members of the Urban Development Institute’s (UDI) Greater Edmonton and Alberta Chapters. Our involvements include:
- Chair of the Shallow Utility Working Group for UDI Metro
- A seat on the Developer Technical Committee for UDI Edmonton Metro.
- A seat on the UDI Greater Edmonton Board
- Chair of the YourDI Urban Leaders Committee
- Municipal Standards Review Committees for various locations, including The City of Edmonton, Strathcona County, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan, Beaumont, Leduc, Lloydminster, and St. Albert.
- In the last 12 years, we have raised over 1.25 million for local charities and donated more than 600k. The value of construction projects we’ve managed is in excess of 1 billion.
